Blood Pressure Stage Checker: AHA/ACC Guidelines

Classify systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings instantly based on official 2017 AHA/ACC clinical practice guidelines.

Check Your Blood Pressure Category

Enter a single systolic and diastolic reading to see its educational category based on the AHA/ACC 2017 guidelines.

Quick Summary

Fast, single-reading blood pressure classification tool. Categorizes readings into Normal, Elevated, Stage 1 Hypertension, Stage 2 Hypertension, or Hypertensive Crisis with clear guideline explanations.

How It Works

  1. Enter your systolic blood pressure — The top number (mmHg), representing the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. Accepts whole numbers from 70 to 260.
  2. Enter your diastolic blood pressure — The bottom number (mmHg), representing the pressure in your arteries between heartbeats. Accepts whole numbers from 40 to 150.
  3. Check the category — The tool compares your values against the AHA/ACC 2017 classification thresholds using standard guideline logic. If either systolic or diastolic reaches a higher category threshold, the reading is classified in that higher category.
  4. Review the educational result — The tool displays the blood pressure category, a description of the threshold that was met, and an educational interpretation of what the category means in the context of the AHA/ACC guidelines.
  5. Read the reference information — The tool includes a reference table of all AHA/ACC blood pressure categories for educational context, along with the disclaimer that this is not a diagnosis.

Formula Used

Classification follows the AHA/ACC 2017 hypertension guideline thresholds. Each reading maps to one of five categories based on systolic and diastolic values:

Blood Pressure Category = AHA/ACC 2017 Guideline Thresholds

The classification is determined by comparing systolic and diastolic values against the following thresholds, using AND/OR logic as defined by the guideline:

  • Normal Range: Systolic less than 120 and Diastolic less than 80
  • Elevated Range: Systolic 120–129 and Diastolic less than 80
  • Stage 1 Hypertension Range: Systolic 130–139 or Diastolic 80–89
  • Stage 2 Hypertension Range: Systolic 140 or higher or Diastolic 90 or higher
  • Hypertensive Crisis: Systolic 180 or higher or Diastolic 120 or higher

The guideline uses AND logic for Normal and Elevated categories (both systolic and diastolic must satisfy the condition) and OR logic for Stage 1, Stage 2, and Hypertensive Crisis categories (if either systolic or diastolic reaches the threshold, the reading is classified at that level). This is the standard clinical logic used in the AHA/ACC 2017 guideline.

Evidence

The blood pressure categories used in this tool are based on the 2017 American College of Cardiology (ACC) / American Heart Association (AHA) Guideline for the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults.

  • The AHA/ACC 2017 Guideline defines blood pressure categories using specific systolic and diastolic thresholds, providing the standard classification system used in clinical practice across the United States.
  • The American Heart Association provides patient education resources on understanding blood pressure readings and home monitoring best practices.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides evidence-based information on high blood pressure prevalence, risk factors, and management.
  • The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) conducts and supports research on blood pressure measurement, hypertension prevention, and cardiovascular health.
  • The National Library of Medicine (MedlinePlus) provides peer-reviewed educational content on blood pressure measurement and hypertension.

This tool compares a single reading against the AHA/ACC thresholds for reference purposes. It does not interpret clinical significance or recommend treatment. A single reading should not be used for diagnosis.

How to Interpret Your Results

The tool interprets your single blood pressure reading against the AHA/ACC 2017 classification:

  • Category — The educational blood pressure category your reading falls into based on the AHA/ACC 2017 guideline thresholds. The category is determined by comparing your systolic and diastolic values against each threshold in descending order of severity, using OR logic for the hypertensive stages and AND logic for Normal and Elevated.
  • Threshold Description — The specific systolic and/or diastolic range that was met to reach the category.
  • Educational Interpretation — A description of the category for reference purposes, including general lifestyle context where applicable.

Important: This tool classifies a single blood pressure reading for informational purposes only. It does not diagnose hypertension, evaluate blood pressure control, predict health outcomes, or recommend treatment changes. Blood pressure classification requires consideration of multiple readings taken under proper conditions over time. A single elevated reading does not indicate a medical condition. Always discuss your blood pressure readings with a qualified healthcare professional.
